The Riders of the Highgarden box set for the A Song of Ice and Fire: Tabletop Miniatures Game gives House Baratheon players in support of Renly Baratheon a new cavalry unit to field on the tabletop. Though moderately armored, the Riders are well trained in the use of their cavalry lances. During a charge, they use them to devastating effect, skewering enemy troopers left and right, the enemy’s own armor seemingly useless against such a powerful attack.

As dedicated front-line units, the Rose Knights in service to King Renly come heavily armed and armored in the finest plate and brightest green that Renly’s extensive purse allows. Hard training and fierce loyalty to their king keep these troops standing and fighting, even in the face of dire wounds. A commander should take care to keep them from being surrounded, but Rose Knights can take the hardest hits and return them twice over.

The one thing that can be said about the ‘neutral’ parties in the War of the Five Kings is that they always remain true to themselves. Whether battling for coin, self-interest, simple survival, or devotion to their nation, the Neutrals lend a wild card factor to any force. Some specialize in working alongside their men in the field like Roose Bolton, Ramsay Snow (and his ‘pet’ Reek), while Petyr Baelish and Lord Varys remain hidden actors, manipulating the flow of battle from behind the scenes. Their methods may be questionable, but their results are undeniable.

While simply armored and lightly armed, Bolton Cutthroats enjoy a reputation for brutality and cold efficiency that allows them to take on enemies with far more expensive armaments. Their spiked maces can easily dispatch enemies, but are more effective for their disabling strikes. Downed foes are simple to dispatch with a very sharp knife, or, worse for the opponent, taken prisoner to suffer a much more agonizing fate.

In the Wilds beyond the Wall, Ranger Hunters reign supreme as deadly ambushers. While true stealth and ambushes are difficult to come by in an open battle, Hunters can strike suddenly, exploiting any weakness, often destroying entire units to a man. Hunters often work best in conjunction with their mounted counterparts, the Ranger Trackers. The two teams working in tandem can effectively obliterate all but the most hardened units. However, as light skirmishers, Hunters should never remain in an extended melee with heavy infantry, nor left vulnerable to a cavalry charge.

Loyal to the older Baratheon brother, Stannis, they are clad in heavy armour and armed with longswords. Their conviction will potentially keep them on the battlefield when others might succumb to their wounds.

The Dothraki Outriders are generally used as scouting forces, using their superior riding skills to spy on the enemy and ascertain the best way for the main army to attack. But once the battle has started, a whole new facet of the unit becomes apparent: they’re also master archers. Archers are generally slower units in an army. Obviously, that’s not the case when your archer is also a master rider.
